I am sick of the so called capitalism story. I think we've had enough of it. Well, it seems like we haven't.

A new branch of Starbucks comes on Campus, and all of a sudden a bunch of people "invade" Starbucks, waging a war against capitalism. Awesome! What they have already forgotten is, ironically, that they are wearing Levi's blue jeans, had a Whopper Menu at Burger King at the weekend, are thinking of treating themselves a chocolate donut at Dunkin' Donuts which is happened to be on campus and probably some of them have an iphone in their pocket. Hold on a sec, we are against capitalism, right?

chocolate.jpg I think it is highimagesCAXW9P4Z.jpg time we put this capitalism rubbish aside, and came up with reasonable arguments as the so called brainy Bogaziçi students. If you have an argument other than capitalism, such as Starbucks does not fancy the idea of having some "smelly" shops around, which, I don't think has a serious ground, you may go for it, but I'd rather stay here.

Another point here: If you go to Bogazici Starbucks and watch what the 'invaders' do, you see that it is not a protest against at all. Starbucks is just the channel through which students think that they found the place to raise their concerns about today's world through their own perspectives. They are discussing Dersim, Blacksea issues such as HES; they defend Seyma's case, they criticize who, what they have thought to operate wrongly. Bogazici Starbucks is just the quarters for their activist thoughts; South Campus being an attraction point for all students, instructors, and the media. Here my blame: whey had they waited till a Starbucks was opened in campus? It is because Starbucks is much more popular. And popular implies capitalist. By protesting against this coffee shop, they are also adding to the popularity of Bogazici Starbucks through advertising it.

If you would like to follow their arguments, inform about their opinions, and discussions, the most direct source is their own blogspot which they write in Starbucks:

Not that I am a big fan of Starbucks, but simply people are making a big issue out of it. If you don't like it, you don't go there. As simple as that. If you think, we are out of space on campus, why don't you protest other shops too? Starting from Akbank, Vodafone, or Dunkin Donuts sounds like a good idea. What has been going on since Starbucks opened is much ado about nothing. My humble advice is, therefore, just leave Starbucks to its own destiny, and focus on your classes since the finals are around the corner.
